Graffiti Across The Mississippi

graffiti1

Another graffiti photo. Wonder about the implications of having multiple posts with the same title. Maybe I should number them, like Xavier? BTW, Xavier will be at the Uptown Art Festival this year again. Stop by at his booth if you happen to be there.

This shot was taken underneath a bridge across the Mississippi. That whole area was fairly tricky to walk around on, mini valleys and canyons, unstable soil. That’s one of the reasons I like to wear solid leather boats on photo shoots like this. They protect your feet and ankles, and give good ankle support. Unfortunately that doesn’t work during summer. Leather boots and shorts, now that would be a sight.

While I was taking photos, I heard this odd rumble behind me. Turned around a watched a section of the hill about the size of a refrigerator break loose and tumble down. Glad I wasn’t standing there :)

Rusty Bridge Beams

rustybridge

One the overhead suspension cable casings in the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati. As bad as the flaking paint looks, the underlying steel is pretty solid. Just needs a new paint job. Maybe there’ll be some stimulus painting. Till then it will present some interesting photo ops.

John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge

The John A. Roebling suspension bridge across the Ohio River was completed in 1866. At the time it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Still impressive.

900,000 Pounds

That’s what the counter weight is for 1/2 of the lift bridge in Duluth (there’s one on each side). The counter weights of course mean that the power required for lifting the bridge is primarily needed to overcome friction, not the actual weight of the bridge. Imagine the hole that weight would make if it were to come loose way up in the air. Not to fear, from what I’ve seen this bridge is well maintained.
