Out on photo shoots, Mitch has reminded me several times that shooting into the sun isn’t necessarily the best thing to do. A bad habit of mine. The camera simply can’t make the adjustments our minds make when looking from dark areas to light areas. For example my eyes saw plenty of detail in the shady areas of the trees across the lake, while at the same time seeing the details in the sky. With the camera you have to sacrifice one or the other, in this case the shade in the trees. Sometimes though it does work out. No one probably cares about what’s going on in the distance.
This shot is from Lake Calhoun. It was very windy that day, and these sailboarders were zipping back and forth at amazingly high speeds.

You can’t shoot into the sun…UNLESS YOU ARE AN HDR WIZARD!
I like backlight, silhouette-y shots. They don’t always work, but when they do, look out. I constantly look for shots that I think would work that way.
Nice photo – I like the silhouette of the person thru the sail…
I think it’s a great shot! Love the clouds and the path of light on the water! Have a great weekend!
like the motion in this shot…i can feel the wind moving the para-sail along…great action.
have a wonderful weekend.
Beautiful sky and scenery!
Beautiful!!
Lovely shot. Makes me wish I was out on that water. Have a great weekend!
I love water sports! Nice to see the sailboarders. Lovely captures.
Have a fantastic weekend.

Well you shouldn’t shoot into the sun. Bad for the lens and the eyes. On the otherhand if you attach a hood you can get some great shots. Or if you are an idiot like me just go for it. It’s a beautifully composed image.
Lovely ..and rules are made to be broken!
Very nice shot and I agree there is a limit to what the camera can pickup but this is a very lovely picture and I don’t miss what I don’t know I can’t see.
It’s a great shot as is (apart, maybe, from the blown highlights in the sea on the left had side). The sky is spot on, composition is great and the action and wake wave and spray gives luvverly interest.
When you’ve got a dynamic range in the scene that is wider than can be captured by the camera as a jpeg, shoot in RAW.
You can then make one exposure from the RAW file set correctly for the highlights and one from the same RAW file, set right for the midtones / shadows. Then combine in Photoshop / equivalent.
Or, as twinceyphoto says, go the full hog and play with HDR software like Dynamic Photo HDR or Photomatix.
You can get great results shooting into the sun, without blown highlights, using the above suggestions. It’s what I do and I’ve had modest success…
Or can this granny already suck eggs? hehe!
I adore this shot.

Great composition with the light through the sail of the windsurfer as well as the thrown up spray. An enjoyable picture.
great sport photo
Wow,I like this. Great shot.
I like the clouds. I often do not have good results when I shoot into the sun. Yours is good.
I’m always tempted to shoot into the sun too and every now and again it works out! Nifty action shot today ;–)
Hugs and blessings,
