Doggy’s Life
Jul.15, 2008
The latest addition to our family, Bear, after enjoying a doggy ice cream treat on a hot day. He was found in a barn in Iowa, apparently having been abused. Through a chain of transfers he’s ended up with us. Being a dog (with corresponding dog brain) he’ll never realize just how lucky he is. We’ve been through a few dogs, always with the same outcome, the day you have to put them down. He’ll have a happy life up to that moment. But we won’t think about that ending for a decade or so. Hopefully he’ll soon stop trying to ‘escape’.

He’s absolutely adorable beyond words! All three of my Border Collies are rescues, and, honestly, I think that they do realize how lucky they are - especially my male, who was mistreated… I can see him flinch if we raise our hand too fast or he knows he did something wrong, but then it is like he realizes “Oh yeah - it’s YOU and you won’t hurt me!” then I see the tail start wagging. He absolutely LIVES to please us, and nothing makes him more happy than hearing us say “Oh, you’re such a good boy!”
I commend you on giving Bear a home… the world needs more people like you!

You are absolutely correct. Bear initially was very afraid of feet, and mine in particular. Initially we could barely walk near him without him jumping up and dashing away. But now he just ‘notices’ my feet as I walk past him sprawled out on the floor, and he’s figured out it’s safer to just stay put instead of jumping up and tripping me up.
